THOMAS MERTON wrote widely on spirituality and social justice. In his work as a Trappist monk, he studied the connections between Eastern religion and Christian belief. An accomplished poet, he published eight collections of poems before his death in 1968. Cables to the Ace, available from Unicorn Press, is the last collection published in his lifetime.
